Think of a free radical as a thief, a small-time thief, that steals little things. Losing something small doesn’t hurt….right? Well hold on a minute, there is more to it.
A free radical wants to steal an electron to become stable which then causes damage to other healthy cells. This causes accelerated skin aging. Not good. A good example of free radical damage can be easily seen in the quick browning of an avocado. This is from oxidation (free radical damage). Sprinkling lime juice (an antioxidant) on the avocado keeps it from browning and perfectly illustrates the preventative effect of an antioxidant on free radical damage.
Some of the most common things that cause free radical damage in the skin are pollution, UV rays, lack of sleep, stress, illness, fried foods, alcohol and tobacco. Not so easy for us to avoid all of these. So, there are things that you can do to help. If the free radical is the thief that steals the electron that ultimately ages your skin, then think of the antioxidant as the guard. Antioxidants can donate an electron to help bring stability back to your cells and help to minimize or prevent free radical damage. The body, when young is well equipped with antioxidants but as time progresses our own antioxidant supply diminished, and we need to supplement. The use of antioxidants topically helps the “guard” to prevent aging.
This is why AlumierMD deems it essential to use topical antioxidants daily along with Broad Spectrum sun protection to act as a guard against free radical damage. Common antioxidants include vitamin C, glutathione, vitamin E, resveratrol, caffeine, silybin, knotgrass extract and grape seed extract. These essential, hard-working ingredients can be found in a variety of AlumierMD home care products.
